What can you do with your crop of vegetables or fruit? Well how about producing pickles, jams or preserves? Do you have any recipes? Then feel free to post them? Are you interested in how to make preserves or how to cook your produce other than just boiling it?

We are looking for 10 people who could be taught 10 recipes who in turn would show 2 other people who in turn teaches 2 more people this results in 15 steps by which time 260 thousand people all being able to cook basic nutritional recipes using fresh food. Interested then contact us? Are you fed up with burgers and chips and want to cook something more exciting for your family or your friends or latest whatever?

The greatest thing of all is that even if you grow the food it is good for your health if you eat it as well it is even better for your health and if you share your knowledge with others than that is good for you too….interested then contact us!!!

Over the last few weeks events have been held at the Willow Tree Health centre there has been some drop in taster sessions on what is going on. These have been repeated on the same day usually a Thursday evening where people have been on hand to answer any questions on the Grow It Cook It Eat It campaign.

At one session held at the Willow Tree Health Centre a group of interested people were asking how they could facilitate the sustainable growing of vegetables as well as flowers as a continuation of the alley gating which had taken place in their area.

With the rising price of food it is of interest to us all with ever increasing demands upon our purse strings and balancing the needs of our stomachs with our budget allowances.

Previously we went to a screening at St Aidan’s in Charlestown, Salford on how Cuba coped with not peak oil (which we have yet to reach in a few more years) but having no oil at all. The long and the short of it is that they are now healthier and have a better education system, than before the collapse of Russia in the early 1990′s.

Permaculture was used as a means to an ends, mainly because of trade restrictions and no support from the IMF or the World Bank. Cuba was on its own, through imorts of bicycles from China the immediate problem of transport was solved, they now have car sharing and free public transport as the norm.

Monday 1^st September –

A mini bus tour was organised to visit Glebelands Organic Market Garden in Sale and East Salford Alleys which are already growing fruit and vegetables and have done community alleyway greening in the past year.

Update Grow Cook Eat Launch Event – 31 July

Event held outside the Willow Tree Health Centre. At the event there was a display of vegetables and herbs growing in containers. Eg courgettes, carrots, beans, and a table display of organic grown fruit and vegetables purchased from Unicorn Grocery.

Bowls of fruit salad and vegetables on kebab sticks were given away. Art workshop with young people designing plates with what their favourite meals. Eg hamburgers, pizza – making chef’s hats

Base line questionnaire filled in by attendees.

Young people interviewed adults about the food they liked etc and recorded this on a digital voice recorder. Sticker board for baseline data on fruit / vegetable consumption.

Lettuce and salad seeds, compost and container were given away so that people could make up a container to take home to grow salad.

Groundwork staff chatted with residents and partners to create links and interest in the project, collecting contact details.
